Kaitlyn Davis - Simmer - Author Interview & Giveaway

Author Interview

Please tell us a little about yourself...
I grew up just outside of New York City and I have always always wanted to be an author! When I was little, I wrote books by duct taping construction paper together and then I would read them aloud to my family… thank goodness my parents never video-taped it! I wrote terribly sappy romances in high school and then, after graduating from college, I got the idea for Ignite and decided to go for it!

Please tell us a little about your book....
I never know how to do this without giving too much away! Here’s the back of the book description for Ignite, the first book in the series:

When Kira Dawson moves to South Carolina, she meets Luke, a blond goofball who quickly becomes her best friend, and Tristan, a mysterious bad boy who sends shivers down her spine. Kira knows they're keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan's lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.

What inspired you to pen this particular novel?
Once I got the idea for the series, there was no going back! The plot literally consumed my mind – it was all I thought about in the shower, before bed, on my way to work! So finally, I sat down and started writing.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
On some level, I think I’ve always been a writer. The creativity was always there and the need to tell stories was always there. But, I’ve only just recently begun to consider myself an author (it still seems a bit surreal!).

How do you keep your story flowing?
I try to let my characters lead the way! When I start a book, I have a detailed outline all put together, but once I start writing, I let my characters tell the story. And if that means ditching the outline, so be it! I love fast-paced plots that never let you take a breath, stories that pull you in and don’t let you go, and I hope that is what my books do!

Do you ever run into writer's block, and if so, what do you do to get past it?
Definitely! Usually that happens when I am too engrossed in my story and I haven’t let myself take a break. I step away from my manuscript, hang out with my friends and let my mind wander for a few days. A solution almost always comes to me! And if it doesn’t, I take that as a sign that my book is going in the wrong direction and I’ll start the scene over.

What is your writing process like? Do you have any quirks, or must-haves to write?
Coffee! I am that stereotypical writer who loves working in Starbucks! Usually, I’ll write in my apartment with a homemade cup of Green Mountain coffee, but sometimes, when I’m reaching a pivotal plot moment, I’ll treat myself to a Starbucks and work there for a few hours.

Where do you hope your books/writing will be in the future?
I know it is totally cliché, but I would love to walk into a Barnes & Noble someday and see my book on the shelf! But don’t get me wrong, self-publishing has been absolutely amazing! I am learning a lot about the industry and about how readers respond to my writing, which is invaluable information. Having any readers at all is so ridiculously exciting! I just hope that someday even more people will be picking up my books and falling in love with my characters!

What do you hope readers will take away from your books?
I just want to create characters people remember – someone who feels like your best friend or your perfect crush! That is the one thing all of my favorite books have in common: I cared about the characters!

What is one piece of advice you received that you carry with you in your writing?
Struggle is what defines a person and stories need a bit of tragedy.

What is one piece of advice you would give to new and aspiring writers?
Don’t write what you think people want to read, write what you believe in. Readers know when an author has put everything they have into a story, and those are the books that really stand out.

Are you currently working on any new projects? What can we expect from you in the future?
I’m always working on new projects! Right now, I’m concentrating on the last two books in the Midnight Fire series. But, I have a stand-alone paranormal book on the back burner. I’m still outlining the basic premise, but I really want to write something about dreams and I really want to try something in first person!

Where can readers find you?
New York City! Shoot me an email of you’re ever in town!
